During the summer of 1834, a group of eastern land investors set its sights on newly platted land at the “great bend” in the Kalamazoo River, now known as Allegan. This former site of a Pottawatomi village was blessed with both beauty and bounty. Surrounded by woods and with a river racing through it, a busy community of commerce and recreation was envisioned. It was a perfect combination for enjoyable and productive lives for those who would purchase parcels of land. They could never imagine the many changes their riverside village would see—the part it would play in the rebuilding of Chicago after the Great Fire of 1871; Allegan’s own devastating fire in 1884, which destroyed the downtown area; the arrival and departure of various businesses; and the phenomenon of countless local families who have had a continuous presence in Allegan for many generations. It is the stories behind these photographs of people, businesses, and events that bring Allegan’s past to light in such a marvelous way.

The little town in upstate South Carolina, embraced by nearby Paris Mountain and the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, is intriguing by its name alone, “Travelers Rest.” It sits at the foot of the Appalachian Mountains, yet it is only a half-day’s journey from the Atlantic Ocean. In 1887, the new railroad afforded access to factories and markets and improved transportation for tourists. Catahoula is more than just a dog picture-book. The origins began in 1993, when photographer John Slaughter was commissioned by a Catahoula-themed restaurant located in Calistoga, California. Following that project, he continued to photograph the Louisiana State Dog. What makes Catahoulas such an interesting subject is that they come in so many different colors, including their eyes. Many of the most striking images are of the dogs' faces. They have an other-worldly stare that says |I am an individual, I am thinking, I am watching, do not assume that I am like other dogs.| Included in this book are several owner articles as well as a section entitled |Cowdogs and Cowboys,| as Catahoulas are known for their herding instincts. Slaughter has been exhibiting photos since 1975 and has brought his composition skills and color sense to bear here, just as he did with Grand Coteau, his previous effort.
